About the Scholarship:

The Gombe Scholarship Program supports master’s and Ph.D. students conducting field research on baboons, chimpanzees, and other primates within the Gombe conservation areas. The program aims to strengthen conservation science by supporting emerging researchers committed to wildlife conservation and community-based environmental stewardship.

 

The scholarship provides financial support for three (3) students for a period of 1–6 months of field research and is intended to enhance scientific knowledge and conservation impact.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be a Tanzanian enrolled in a master’s or Ph.D. program in wildlife research, conservation biology, zoology, primatology, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Conduct research within the Gombe conservation areas.
  • Show commitment to wildlife conservation and community development.
  • Demonstrate financial need for field research support.
  • Provide proof of enrolment or admission to a TCU recognized university.
  • Be available for monitoring and evaluation during the scholarship period.
  • Submit a final research report and be willing to collaborate with the Jane Goodall Institute where applicable.
  • The scholarship is open to applicants of all genders.

 

Scholarship Coverage

  • The scholarship supports approved field research costs, including field supplies and stationery, lab consumables, accommodation during fieldwork, field research assistance, meals during field activities and transportation related to field research

 

Note: The scholarship covers only field research expenses and does not fund tuition fees or long-term academic costs.

 

Application Requirements

Applicants should submit:

  • Cover letter explaining why they are suitable for the scholarship
  • Updated CV
  • Research proposal/action plan
  • Two recommendation letters
  • Proof of enrolment/admission
  • Budget justification for requested field support

 

Expected Outputs

Scholarship recipients are expected to produce scholarly outputs based on their research, such as:

  • Peer-reviewed journal articles
  • Conference papers
  • Book chapters
  • Published master’s or Ph.D. theses
  • Technical briefs, field manuals, or other recognized scientific publications
